Plant Transport and Movement

Today went over last day's homework assignment. Then we watched a video that explained:

  • the tissues that move products of photosynthesis (glucose using phloem tisue) from the leaves to other parts of the plant
  • the tissues that move water and minerals (using xylem tissue) up the plant from the roots to the leaves
  • how water moves up in a plant: -as water evaporates from leaves (transpiration), this pulls water up from the roots; water helps to pull up other water molecules because water sticks to other water molecules (cohesion) and to the xylem cells (adhesion)
  • how plants move in the direction of a stimulus (this type of movement is called tropism);for example - plants move and grow in the direction of the sun (phototropism); or another example - plants move as they grow, stem up but roots down toward gravity (geotropism)
  • how plants move in response to a stimulus, but not necessarily in a specific direction (non directional movement) for examlpe, dandelion flowers close at night and open in the morning
  • how plants move as they grow - nutational movement

Homework:

  • textbook p.470 # 2 - 3
  • Moss and Fern TEST next Thurs., Mar. 12
